Medical Marijuana Registration Begins

Nearly 100 patients registered to legally treat ailments with medical marijuana at the Bureau of Health Professions' Ottawa Building in Lansing this week.

Sixteen mailed in applications over the weekend.

''We received a total of 101 applications,'' said James McCurtis, a public information officer with the Michigan Department of Community Health.

The November law required the state under the Michigan Medical Marijuana Program to commence registration of qualified medical marijuana users by April 4.

Based on population registration in other states where medical marijuana is legal, one-half of one percent of the state's population tends to apply, said Greg Francisco, executive director of the Michigan Medical Marijuana Association.

If accurate, that means 50,000 Michigan residents might register at a cost of $100 per registration, which translates into $5 million for the state-run program. Registration for residents receiving Supplemental Security Income or Medicaid is reduced to $25.

McCurtis recommends patients print the application off the Web site,

michigan/gov/mmp, and mail the completed application to the Michigan Department of Community Health, Medical Marijuana Registry, P.O. Box 30083, Lansing, MI 48909.
