Lansing City Council's public safety committee will meet with community members Thursday to talk about the proposed medical marijuana ordinance.

The 6 p.m. meeting, scheduled for the Foster Community Center at 200 N. Foster Ave., is planned in part to allow residents an opportunity to share their opinions on the draft policy.

A moratorium on licenses for medical marijuana establishments in Lansing ends July 1. Businesses in operation throughout the city would be grandfathered in under the draft ordinance. Per the proposal, new cultivation and distribution sites would be allowed in industrial and some commercial zones. They would have to stay 1,000 feet away from schools, churches and other marijuana operations.

Public hearings will follow. Lansing City Council will hear public comment June 20 during a meeting at City Hall, 124 W. Michigan Ave. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. The Lansing planning board simultaneously will review the policy and will take comments at 4:30 p.m. June 23 at the Planning and Neighborhood Development Conference Room, 316 N. Capitol Ave.
