Leaders in Middletown have approved a city-owned building to be used for growing medical marijuana.

Even though it still needs the ok from the state, the city gave a company the green light to lease a building on Johnson Street for the pot factory

This could be the home of one of the state's first marijuana growing plants. In addition to renovating the space, they'll also have to make it secure.

Security is first and foremost when dealing with a marijuana grow operation, now legal in the state ever since the use of medical marijuana was passed by lawmakers.

"If the state approves them, it's going to predicated on having on an extreme robust security plan on top of which we're actually consistently working to make that building more secure," said Mayor Dan Drew, (D) Middletown.

City councilors voted 6 to 3 to lease a 15,000 square foot space on the second floor of the city-owned Remington Rand Building to Greenbelt Management, which hopes to turn the empty space into another new business for Middletown.

Zen Roasters has been on the first floor for two years now.

"It sounds like it will be better for the economy and also better for us here," said Josh Wright, Zen Roasters.

Josh Wright welcomes his potential new neighbors which could start off cultivating as many as a dozen new jobs and maybe more business for him.

"Well there's a $25,000 deposit just from this business coming in here," said Drew.

Rent will help boost the city's economic development efforts, while businesses in this building add to the city's tax base. Two breweries and an organic food delivery service are also moving into this Brownfield site getting cleaner each day.

Some may not have wanted this type of operation but as the mayor points out, it is legal and now it's been approved.

"Our piece is done and when they're ready to move in they're going to be welcome here," said Drew.

Before it can even begin to build, Greenbelt Management still needs to get a license from the state.
