Supporters of medical cannabis swarmed the Iowa statehouse Tuesday to gain the attention of lawmakers.

They're asking for passage of a bill that creates a medical cannabis program in Iowa allowing people to make, distribute, and have the drug in their homes.

Community leaders, gathered on the Capitol steps taking turns speaking about why the state needs to step up support for this special medical option, especially effective for people battling epilepsy.

The mother of one Iowa girl fighting the disease says legislation can not wait any longer.

"They can not wait 20 years for the FDA or a new President or enough research to silence the critics," said Sally Gaer a medical cannabis advocate

According to a recent Des Moines Register poll, medical cannabis is supported by 78 percent of Iowans.
