MUSKEGON – A Muskegon Fire Department battalion chief has been charged with a felony for allegedly growing marijuana in his Muskegon home, authorities said.

Mark Charles Johnson, 49, of 2345 Chester, has been charged with manufacturing marijuana, a four-year felony.

A warrant was issued on Aug. 31, according to Muskegon County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Brett Gardner.

Johnson is expected to be arraigned on Wednesday in Muskegon County's 60th District Court.

"The Muskegon Police Department received a tip that there was marijuana growing at his residence. Upon a consent search, (authorities) discovered two marijuana plants," Gardner said.

Johnson was then placed on paid-administrative leave, sources confirmed.

Johnson is represented by attorney Terry Nolan.

The West Michigan Enforcement Team is handling the investigation.
