Deputies in one Eastern Carolina county are telling people they won't get high and should stop stealing hemp plants from fields.

Five people in Edgecombe County have been arrested after deputies say they stole hemp plants, possibly believing they might be marijuana.

Industrial hemp is a cousin to marijuana, but contains less than 1% of THC, the ingredient that provides the euphoric high in marijuana.

Deputies say they recently have seen a number of cases involving the theft of the hemp plants.

On Monday, they found three people trying to steal hemp plants. William Cooper, Malik Hudson, and Jacquel Baker-Johnson were charged with 2nd degree trespassing.

Then yesterday deputies discovered two others who had already stolen hemp plants from a field. Milton Epps and Kenneth Williams were charged with felony larceny and 2nd degree trespassing.

Deputies say they are watching hemp fields and will charge anyone who is trespassing on them.
