Those supporting a proposal to legalize medical marijuana in North Dakota have collected several thousand signatures just a few weeks after petitions hit the streets.

Ray Morgan of Fargo, chairman of the sponsoring committee, says petition carriers report having little problem finding people to sign on. Morgan expects to have the necessary signatures by early April.

The North Dakota Committee for Medical Marijuana needs 13,452 valid signatures filed with the secretary of state by July 11 to get the measure on the November ballot. However, Morgan says the campaign intends to collect more signatures than necessary to make up for signatures that get disqualified. The goal is 15,000 signatures.

If passed, the measure would allow people to have up to 3 ounces of medical marijuana for treatment of nearly a dozen medical conditions.
