The New Mexico medical cannabis advisory board will meet Friday in Santa Fe to consider adding ADHD to list of aliments approved for medical marijuana use.
Medical marijuana is approved to treat several diseases in New Mexico. The advisory board meets only twice a year.
People with ADHD, a brain disease, lack the receptors that give them the ability to concentrate. Without those receptors, they struggle to focus.
KOAT medical expert Dr. Barry Ramo said he can see why some might think medical marijuana could help, but the solution might not be that simple.
"They're theoretical reasons, perhaps, that if somebody is more relaxed, they'll be able to concentrate better. ADHD is a very complicated brain disease," Dr. Ramo said.
Some of the symptoms of ADHD in adults include trouble focusing, frustration, mood swings and a short temper.
"So right now, it's just like taking any other supplement. We don't know whether it works, you don't know what the right dose is," Dr. Ramo said.
Ramo suggests that people concerned about ADHD might consider treatments like cognitive therapy.
