The Buffalo Common Council is calling on NYS to open a medical marijuana dispensary within the city limits.

When New York State's medical marijuana program, dubbed the Compassionate Care Act, is officially launched in January of 2016, there will be 20 dispensaries across the state, but none in the City of Buffalo.

The closest dispensaries to Buffalo will be in Amherst and Williamsville.

This week Common Council President Darius Pridgen submitted a resolution asking the state to both expedite the implementation of the Compassionate Care Act and add an additional dispensary in the city to serve potential patients that rely on public transportation.

The resolution says that the distance of the dispensaries from the city will, "place a burden on people dealing with severe, debilitating or life-threatening health issues."

The resolution was passed unanimously by the Council and was sent to Governor Cuomo, the NYS Assembly, the NYS Senate and the Commissioner of Health.
