The day after Ohio voters rejected a proposal to legalize marijuana, lawmakers are looking at ways to make medical pot legal.

Ohio House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger, R-Clarksville, said during a post-election meeting with reporters that he has met with several families who want medical marijuana, and lawmakers on both sides of aisle will support it.

He said lawmakers are looking at a series of resolutions and bills to bring medical marijuana to Ohio after clinical trials. They will not consider legalizing pot for recreational use.

The medical community will be "engaged" to guide process to OK medical marijuana in Ohio, which could be done as soon as next year, said Rep. Kirk Schuring, R-Canton.

Despite Gov. John Kasich's worry about sending "mixed message" on drugs, Rosenberger says legalizing medical marijuana won't hurt drug fight.

Issue 3, backed by ResponsibleOhio's $20-million-plus campaign, was defeated by 64 percent of voters, and it lost in every Ohio county.

After the defeat Tuesday night, Rep. Ryan Smith, R-Bidwell said, "In talking to people, it was surprising to me how many said they support medical marijuana. We obviously want to help the parents with children that are ill and the elderly that are suffering. We just want to make sure the scientists tell us it will help and we write it in a responsible way."
