For the ninth year in a row, State Senator Connie Johnson has proposed a bill that legalize marijuana in some form. This year's proposal would make the personal use, possession, and growing of marijuana legal for adults over 21. Senate Bill 2116 was proposed by Sen. Johnson (D-Oklahoma County). The bill would establish a system that would regulate and tax marijuana in a similar manner as alcohol. The bill would be similar to ones passed by voters in Washington and Colorado in 2013. Possession of marijuana would be limited to one ounce and by adults 21 or older.

Sen. Johnson calls the prohibition of marijuana a 'disaster' for Oklahoma and is particularly hard on minorities. She says minorities are three times as likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than white residents. "As taxpayers, we're spending over $30 million each year policing, jailing and incarcerating our citizens on marijuana-related offenses," said Johnson. "Yet marijuana is almost universally available. It's time for a smarter approach." The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Select Agencies will hold a hearing on the science of medical marijuana on Wednesday, February 12th at 11:30am. Sen. Johnson has been a fervent support of legalizing marijuana. In November, she rallied with parents to legalize the medicinal use at the statehouse.
