Two more Roseburg marijuana vendors are now eligible to sell recreational marijuana to the public as of this week.

Since Jan. 1, dispensaries were prohibited by law from selling retail marijuana to the public without a recreational marijuana license, but they could still sell to medical marijuana cardholders.

But as of Monday, the 420 Club at 2576 N.E. Stephens St. had passed inspection for a retail marijuana license and received the green light to sell recreational cannabis to the public.

"When we finally got our license handed to us, we immediately framed it," said 420 Club manager Katie Hoyt. The store employs four workers besides the two owners who work at the store that's open seven days a week.

Canna King at 1449 N.W. Mulholland Dr. was also recently inspected and expects to sell recreational marijuana by early next week.

During January, four of the five marijuana vendors in Roseburg were unable to sell recreationally because Oregon Liquor Control Commission inspectors had not completed site inspections to finalize the recreational licensing application process. Only La Mota, at its Roseburg and Drain locations, was selling recreational marijuana in the county.

The two recent approvals came after a month-long decline in recreational marijuana sales that caused the businesses to lose about 95 percent of daily sales, according to their managers.

"The entire month (of January) has been so slow; we had to turn away so many people," Hoyt said. That's because the dispensary was only allowed to sell to medical marijuana cardholders.

The decrease in sales was a result of the number of medical marijuana cardholders declining since the legalization of recreational marijuana in the state of Oregon. Many cardholders opted not to renew their cards to avoid costly physician and application fees and chose to purchase recreational marijuana instead.

"Even though they don't have their medical cards, a lot of people still use marijuana for medical ailments," Hoyt said. "With recreational being closed, there were several people we had to turn away on a daily basis that really needed it."

During the month of January, Hoyt reported the 420 Club lost about $2,000 in daily sales and another $4,000 on Fridays when the store holds its weekly specials.

Canna King owner Dennis Rogers also reported large losses in recreational marijuana sales in January, amounting to about $4,000 daily at this time of year. In summer, he said his business makes about $8,000 a day.

"We are expecting our approval to go through the final committee (Thursday night) and we are expecting to get our license Friday as per word of our inspector," Rogers said Thursday.

"We will be open for recreational users come Monday," he added.

Two other Roseburg dispensaries, Cougar Cannabis and Umpqua Green Cross, are still waiting for OLCC inspectors to visit their sites prior to granting them recreational marijuana license approval.
