State officials have appointed 15 members to a new cannabis research task force charged with studying and recommending legislation on the development of the medical marijuana industry.

The body – officially called the Task Force on Researching the Medical and Public Health Properties of Cannabis – has yet to schedule its first meeting, said Susan Wickstrom, an Oregon Health Authority spokeswoman. The agency was in the process of scheduling one at press time.{img:93781}

Legislation earlier this year established the task force to answer questions about the credibility of existing research on the medical properties of marijuana and to propose solutions to limitations on cannabis research. The task force will examine the legal barriers to establishing research laboratories and using institutional review boards to monitor and review research.

Lawmakers also are interested in the possibility of using state or private sector funds to pay for research and establishing a state-run research grow site.

The task force was due to deliver its first report and recommendations Dec. 15, but appointees were not announced until earlier this week.

Another set of report and recommendations is due Feb. 1.

Senate President Peter Courtney appointed a Senate representative, Sen. Chris Edwards, D-Eugene. The House representative, appointed by House Speaker Tina Kotek, D-Portland, is Rep. Carl Wilson, R-Grants Pass.

The governor appointed the other 13 members.

They include:

- William Schuette, research analyst at Oregon Liquor Control Commission (regulatory agency for recreational marijuana).

- Katrina Hedberg, state health officer and state epidemiologist with Oregon Health Authority (regulatory agency for medical marijuana).

- Assistant Attorney General Shannon O'Fallon.

- Robert Hitzemann, chair of the behavioral neuroscience department at Oregon Health and Science University.

- Jane Ishmael, associate professor in the College of Pharmacy at Oregon State University.

- Mowgli Holmes, chief scientific officer at Phylos Bioscience in Portland and board member of Cannabis Safety Institute.

- Anthony Smith, molecular biologist and executive scientist and found of Kenevir Research Labs, providing consulting services for cannabis businesses.
