Subject: Peter McWilliams update

This morning I got a phone call from Peter McWilliams' mother Mary
McWilliams who is still in Los Angeles and she said she met recently with
Jack Herer who gave her his hemp/cannabis activist/history lecture and she
seemed this time a bit more vocal in her support of the medical marijuana
issue expressing hope that it should be legalized to prevent others from
experiencing the kind of suffering that Peter did.

She said that she wished she had found the poem that Peter
left (reproduced below) before the funeral as she would have put it into the
program they handed out at the funeral which included some other quotes from
his writings. You may want to consider this also since it seems as close to
an "autobiographical epitaph" as it gets -- at least that is the sense I got
from her emotions about it on the phone.

I called Mary back to discuss whether a wrongful death
lawsuit will be filed over Peter's death. She said that she had not
considered the idea as yet but in any case would have to wait a bit longer
for the coroner's report regarding exact cause of death, etc. She explained
again that she felt Peter's condition was further compromised by the smoke
inhalation he suffered during the still suspicious fire that burned his
house two days before he died. He had to be rescued by the fire department
out a second story window when he also suffered some burns and cuts but
refused to go to the hospital as the firemen urged him to. So before any
wrongful death lawsuit considerations can be made she needs to carefully
review and consult about the still awaited coroner's report and the fire
department's report about the origin of the fire which started at his
computer area (Ann McCormick says he had extension cords "all over the
place" so it may indeed have been just an accidental fire). Mary will be in
Los Angeles still until July 24th.

Mary said she found a 3x5 card in Peter's desk with what seemed like a
touching message (for her?) in anticipation of his death and she read it to
me
on the phone to copy and offer via the email networks:

Peter McWilliams death poem--

"When I'm gone, let me go.

"Don't pull me back to this Earth that I've loved and hated so.

"Wish me well on my journey, as I do on yours.

"And if we meet again, let's leave that in the hands of God."

-----end poem

Mary was quite touched by this and read it the first time with voice
atremble so I thought that you would want to know.

Plans are being made for a memorial service in NY on Aug5 Peter's birthday
and when I get details I will forward to this list.
