MISSOULA, Mont. -- Time is running out to get signatures on a petition to get the medical marijuana debate on the ballot, and advocates think they're about halfway to their goal.

Here are the facts: The Montana Legislature passed SB 423 in the final hours of the 2011 session. The law put tight restrictions on medical marijuana providers.

Petition organizers need 5% of voters' signatures, almost 25,000, to turn the issue over to voters in 2012. If organizers get signatures from 15% of voters in 51 districts, the current law will be suspended until the election.

Another group, Safe Community Safe Kids, is raising money to halt the petition drive. Organizers want to reach as many Montanans as possible to tell them why they think 423 should remain law.

Medical marijuana advocates have until September 30 to gather signatures. Then, each one has to be validated by an elections office.
