Redding Considers Medical Marijuana Tax

Redding is considering a tax on medical marijuana. Tuesday, council members discussed taxing sales at the city's 19 permitted collectives.

The city already charges cannabis clubs permit fees to cover the cost of things like police inspections and background checks.

Redding Vice Mayor Missy McArthur likens a medical marijuana tax to alcohol and tobacco taxes. It would mean a lot of extra money for the city.

"The city's budget has really been stretched and we are trying to keep cops on the beat and firefighters there" said McArthur.

But some worry it could make medical cannabis less affordable to those who need it.

"For some of the lower income people, I'm sure {buying medicinal marijuana} is going to be more of a stretch, a bit more difficult," said Tyler Meeks, President of MediCali Cannabis Club in Redding.

There are no concrete plans or proposals yet.
