The vote was 6 to 1. A major hurdle for marijuana has been crossed. On Monday, the Nevada Tax Commission approved the temporary regulations allowing the sale of retail pot. The move clears the way for legal marijuana sales to begin as early as July 1.
"If we wanted to have an early start program and have it operational in the summer, these regulations needed to pass today," said Amanda Connor, who spoke to the Commission on behalf of the Nevada Cannabis Coalition.
There have been more than 100 public hearings since Nevada voters approved recreational marijuana last November.
A part of the regulation package that passed on Monday includes tens of thousands of dollars in licensing fees:
-Retail Dispensary: $25,000
-Cultivation Facility: $30,000
-Testing Facility: $15,000
The turnaround to grant applicants approval is quick, given that Nevada's medical marijuana program took 15 years to get off the ground. A few members of the public expressed opposition to an early start recreational program while attending the Nevada Tax Commission hearing in Nevada.
However, the marijuana industry insists Nevada is ready to regulate.
"It does seem like a very short timeline to get the temporary regulations here today — but they have several years of experience and knowledge to rely on," said Connor.
In Clark County, each medical marijuana business applying for a retail license will still need to be granted a special permit to start sales. Clark County has already begun accepting applications and is expected to hold hearings on June 7.
