The bill that could legalize medical marijuana in Georgia is expected to officially appear before the state House of Representatives on Monday.

House Bill 1 sponsor Representative Allen Peake and several families who have children with seizure disorders are holding a press conference at the state Capitol in Atlanta.

It's scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in the south ante room.

Under House Bill 1, families who have left Georgia for states like Colorado, where medical marijuana is legal, will be granted immunity for bringing cannabis oil back to our state.

Peake says that would still be breaking federal law, so he is considering other options like working with other states to ship medical cannabis to Georgia families. He's also working to get federal exemption from the Drug Enforcement Administration.

An earlier draft of the bill also included a plan to grow and distribute medical cannabis here in Georgia, but Peake says after talks with Governor Nathan Deal, that's been pushed back for at least another year.

They've commissioned a study committee who will have until the end of the year to submit a plan of growing and distributing medical marijuana in the state to the General Assembly.
