New Hampshire Senate President Peter Bragdon believes a medical marijuana bill will make it through the Legislature this year.
"There seems to be some evidence that it does for various reasons provide relief for people with medical issues," Bragdon said during a forum Friday at Milford Town Hall. He used to oppose making legalizing cannabis for therapeutic purposes, but changed his position after learning more about its positive effects for certain patients.
Bragdon added that it would need to be tightly regulated if such legislation does pass.
Bragdon, joined by U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) came down to Milford Town Hall to talk about the economy's effects on small businesses in New Hampshire. The two had a wide-raning conversation on topics, including North Korea, gun control and medical marijuana legalization.
WMUR political analyst moderated the discussion and shared questions from the audience at the well-attended event. He asked Bragdon what he thought about the legalization of marijuana in New Hampshire.
Pindell asked Ayotte about her stance against the GOP filibuster last week on gun control legislation in the US Senate. She replied that she firmly believes in protecting second amendment rights, but this is an issue that needs to be talked about.
"If we can't have a debate about preventing violence and protecting peoples second amendment rights at the same time, we have a real problem," said Ayotte. "I think this an important issue that deserves a debate in front of the American people."
Ayotte also responded to concerns about North Korea by pointing out the difference between the country's actions in the past and now. The young new leader is "unpredictable" and there is no telling if his threats will become a reality.
"No one can predict if this is pure saber rattling," said Ayotte. She added that measures are being taken to prepare for the worst, but China could easily end the situation by pressure North Korea, who is dependant on their resources.
Pindell tried to get Ayotte to reveal whether or not her colleague Scott Brown is serious about a run in New Hampshire. No such luck this time.
