Sixty Percent Of Americans Favor State Run Pot Programs

A recent poll conducted by The Huffington Post reveals sixty percent of Americans support medical marijuana and think the government should quit cracking down on states that have pot laws currently in place.

The poll conducted among 1,000 adults from a wide spectrum of age, race, gender, education and employment, shows an overwhelming support for state run marijuana programs with only 26 percent opposed.

Unsurprisingly, 69 percent of Democrats and 61 percent of independents support the legalization of pot. What is surprising, is the fact that 46 percent of Republicans support the legalization of weed.

The American people have made it abundantly clear that they want the Obama administration to stop prosecuting legal medical marijuana patients, dispensaries and state approved weed growers.

On August 21, 2007, at an event in Nashua, New Hampshire, then Presidential candidate Barack Obama said, "I would not have the Justice Department prosecuting and raiding medical marijuana users. It's not a good use of our resources."

However, in the past four-and-a-half years the Obama administration has spent nearly $300 million cracking down on the very thing he said would be a bad use of government resources.

Speaking of wasted government resources, local governments spent $3.6 billion combined to enforce marijuana possession laws in 2010.

In June 2011, the Justice Department issued a memorandum saying in effect,"We're not going to target individual patients and their caregivers. But we certainly are not going to let commercial dispensaries off the hook."

According to a recent report by the ACLU, " The United States has fought a losing domestic drug war that has cost one trillion dollars, resulting in over 40 million arrests."

Twenty states including Washington D.C. have legalized medical marijuana with fifty-seven percent of Americans wanting the federal government to stop interfering with state run pot programs.

The government with their fingers firmly planted in their ears, blatantly ignores the will of the people, while it continues to throw money at an inane, archaic ideal whose time has surely come.

Unless the American people push the issue like they did for gay rights, the government will happily maintain its status quo, while non-violent marijuana users and suppliers pay the ultimate price of a failed drug war.
