Switching to Flower mode

I'm about to go from veg. to flower, and I've heard you should start with your lights higher than normal. If true how high for how long.
I'm going from T5- 4'X8 bulb florescent to 1000w HPS thats air cooled and dim able.

A 1000wt bulbs need to be at least 16"(inches) from any surface or it will ignite that surface (except glass and metal reflectors) The distance from the plants should be about the same or higher initially. The plants will stretch in flower and you can bring the light down a little but never like the T-5's. Be sensible so you dont start a fire those bulbs will peel your skin no problem.
