Talk Of Medical Marijuana Businesses Under Way

Even before medical marijuana became legal in Massachusetts Tuesday night, one Colorado law firm was already planning to help residents open marijuana businesses in the Bay State.

Vincente Sederberg LLC has scheduled two seminars in the next month to help Massachusetts residents open marijuana dispensaries. The newly passed ballot question allows for up to 35 to be created in the first year.

As Massachusetts legalized the drug as treatment for some debilitating conditions on Tuesday, Colorado and Washington state legalized it for recreational use.

"I think we're moving into a new age where we're seeing the regulation of marijuana," said Shaleen Title, an attorney who works at Vincente Sederberg's Medford office.

Their Colorado customers include recent college graduates as well as experienced businesspeople looking to invest in a growing industry, Title said.

The firm's November seminar is slated to discuss patients' rights and "business basics" of selling marijuana. The December seminar will discuss "all aspects of starting and running a successful medical marijuana business."

Medical marijuana passed easily in Massachusetts Tuesday with 63 percent of the vote. The drug is still illegal under federal law.

Opponents argued the wording of the ballot question leaves too many loopholes that will guide marijuana into the hands of criminals and young people.

Title said they don't want that to happen.

"It's really, really important for the medical marijuana business to be an active, vibrant, responsible part of the community," she said.

The state Department of Public Health is charged with overseeing the medical marijuana program, which is scheduled to take effect in January. Officials so far have not said how they will address their new charge.
