Four of the seven top-tier gubernatorial candidates won't say whether they've recreationally smoked marijuana, according to a USA TODAY NETWORK-Tennessee survey.
Among the seven candidates, only Knoxville entrepreneur Randy Boyd, a Republican, said he tried marijuana.
"Randy says as a teenager he tried it one time when marijuana was being passed around during a ZZ Top concert," said Laine Arnold, a spokeswoman for Boyd's campaign.
U.S. Rep. Diane Black and former state Sen. Mae Beavers, both Republicans, said they have not smoked marijuana.
The four other candidates – Republicans Bill Lee, a Williamson County businessman, and House Speaker Beth Harwell, and Democrats Karl Dean, the former mayor of Nashville, and House Minority Leader Craig Fitzhugh – twice declined to answer the survey about whether they tried marijuana.
All five Republicans and Dean said they were opposed to recreational marijuana. Fitzhugh did not answer a question about it.
