Any teenager or ageing hippy can walk down the street of any Scottish city and get hold of cannabis without any great fear of prosecution.
But patients suffering from cancerous tumors, who find that cannabis compounds appear to ease their condition when other more conventional treatments have failed, are left to pay for private prescriptions to give them hope of reversing their illness.
Kate Munford, 21, underwent four life-threatening surgeries and grueling courses of chemo and radiotherapy.
Her family has found that a private prescription, costing hundreds of pounds a month, gives her hope of reducing the size of her tumors.
Sativex, a mouth spray that Kate uses, is the only licensed cannabis-based medicine in Britain.
It is designed to reduce muscle spasms in people with multiple sclerosis but research has claimed the drug can help shrink tumors.
If the cost is not prohibitive and the drug appears to be effective for cancer treatment, then the licensing authority, the Scottish Medical Consortium, should give consideration to making cannabis compounds more widely available.
