AMHERST, Mass. -- A University of Massachusetts researcher says he is going to court to force the federal government to rule on his three-year-old bid to grow marijuana in his lab at the Amherst campus.

Lyle Craker, who directs the university's medicinal plant program, says he wants to grow the marijuana for government-approved medicinal research. He says he filed an application with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration in June 2001 for a permit, but the agency has not responded.

A DEA spokesman had no immediate comment.
