Washington: Bipartisan Bill Would Allow Recreational Marijuana To Be Grown At Home

Two companion bills in Washington would allow residents to grow their own recreational marijuana out of their own homes.

State Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles and Rep. Brian Blake of Aberdeen say that since marijuana is legal in the state, it makes sense that residents should be allowed to grow their own, KIRO-TV reports. Although recreational pot shops have popped up all over the state following the legalization of weed, it's still illegal for individuals to grow without a medical marijuana permit or a commercial growing license.

But the other states which have legalized marijuana currently allow recreational marijuana to be grown in people's own homes.

"Oregon, Alaska, Colorado and the District of Columbia all allow home grows," Kohl-Welles told KIRO.
The bipartisan bill would allow adults over the age of 21 to grow six marijuana plants for personal use. Growers can also have up to eight ounces of useable marijuana in their possession at any given time and are allowed to donate up to one ounce to another adult for no compensation.

Some recreational pot shop owners support the bill and say they don't think that private growing of weed would be bad for their businesses.

"I think it would be good for everybody to actually try it themselves and experience themselves," Noel Roberts, owner of Mary Mart in Tacoma, told KIRO.

Roberts adds that growing high-quality marijuana is a complicated process.

"There could actually be up to 20 different nutrients that are added it depends on how you grow it," Roberts told KIRO. "But to actually get something on the shelves here, it takes a lot of love and a lot of work."

Kudos to these two true representatives of the residents. It only makes sense to allow for home cultivation. Anything short of this just shows an ulterior motive to take advantage of the situation and the residents at the hands of Big Government and Big Business rustling between the sheets together.
