What's Next For ResponsibleOhio's Marijuana Amendment?

After collecting more than enough valid signatures, ResponsibleOhio got the green light from the Secretary of State's Office to get its marijuana legalization amendment on the November ballot.

The group's amendment would legalize medical marijuana and legalize the personal use for those who are over 21, plus regulate the drug overall.

Some groups say it's still a health and safety concern.

"Legal or illegal it's a challenge for our youth, and we feel that, looking out of some of the data out of CO, emergency room visits are up 147 percent and that's certainly a huge concern for us," said Milan Karna, Wood County Prevention Coalition.

If passed, the amendment will also limit the number of growers and investors in the marijuana industry.

And while supporters say it will bring millions of dollars to Lucas County, others say they'll continue to advocate against that kind of monopoly.

"Because there has been a lot of money involved in trying to get that effort going, I think it wasn't really a huge surprise for many folks," said Karna. "What I do know, is when we look at CO and other states, it's certainly a different business model than those out there."

The next step for ResponsibleOhio is for the State Ballot Board to determine the language that voters will see this fall, along with the issue number.

But opposers say marijuana for medical use should be researched like other medicines and not used as a voter initiative.

"Certainly the challenge will be there no matter what, whether illegal or legal but certainly increased availability is a concern of ours," said Karna.

The hearing for the ballot language certification will take place Tuesday.
