We are committed to telling stories that go beyond the surface. Many people have reported on the Responsible Ohio push to legalize marijuana in Ohio.

The group is gathering signatures and hoping to get the proposal to legalize the drug on the November ballot.

So we sent WCPO reporter Lisa Bernard-Kuhn and photojournalist Emily Maxwell to Colorado in April. While there they toured pot dispensaries and cultivation farms, looked inside the offices of policy makers and law enforcement wrestling with new regulations, and glimpsed into the lives of Coloradans forever changed by this now legal drug.

The goal is to give Ohioans a more informed look at how legal weed could change the future of our state.

Emily and Lisa produced five stories from the trip.

  • First is a piece on lessons the pair learned from the trip to Colorado and how residents and lawmakers are grappling with legal pot.

  • They profiled the Benton family. The family moved from Ohio to Colorado to receive medical marijuana treatments for 3-year-old Addyson, who suffers from seizures.

  • They looked at the booming business of pot - and what that could be like here in Ohio.

  • They looked at the challenges of keeping legal pot from crossing state lines and migrating into states where weed isn't legal.

  • Finally, they looked at the campaign to legalize pot itself.
