Jasper RCMP uncovered $140,000 in marijuana stuffed in a hockey bag on a
train headed for Winnipeg.

Mounties and a police dog made the discovery at 11 a.m. Wednesday during a
check of the Via Rail train's baggage compartment. The train, which started
out in Vancouver, made a scheduled stop in Jasper.

Police arrested a female passenger and found two grams of cocaine. Then they
obtained a search warrant to look inside a hockey bag that reeked of
marijuana. There was 14 pounds of drugs inside, say RCMP.

"That's a lot of money that's taken off the street. Someone on the drug end
is losing some money," said RCMP Cpl. Dave Osborne.

Police believe the drugs originated in B.C. and were in fact destined for
Winnipeg. Officers from the detachment try to check trains coming through
town as often as they can.

The RCMP and Via Rail work well together, said Osborne. Police have seized
drugs off trains three separate times in roughly the last 13 months. The
biggest bust was last October when 120 pounds of marijuana, worth about
$400,000, was found, said Osborne. "We've had some good success. It has an
overall deterrent Canada-wide when you can take this amount of drugs off the
street. We'll never stop it, but we're happy (with the seizures)."

Via Rail spokesman Catherine Kaloutsky said the company stays in regular
contact with law enforcement agencies across the country. And employees are
vigilant about looking for anything suspicious.
