Supporters of legalizing medical marijuana in Wyoming are closer to collecting signatures to get the proposal on the 2016 general election ballot.

The Secretary of State's office certified the application for the ballot initiative.

Secretary of State Ed Murray says his office determined that the application met all requirements under the law.

The Wyoming National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, the organization behind the proposal, must collect nearly 25,700 signatures of registered voters by Feb. 8 in order to get it on the ballot.

State Election Director Peggy Nighswonger says that petitions will not be printed until the Secretary of State's Office has completed necessary paperwork and prepared an estimate and explanation of the proposal's fiscal impact.

Once printed, petitions are handed over for circulation.
