A pro-marijuana group in Wyoming received the green light Thursday to begin collecting signatures to put a medical marijuana legalization initiative on the 2016 general ballot.

The Wyoming National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws may begin circulating petitions around the state to obtain the signatures of more than 25,000 registered voters, according to a press release from the Secretary of State's office.

The number of signatures must equal at least 15 percent of the total number of votes cast in the previous statewide general election. The signatures must be obtained proportionally from 15 percent of resident voters in at least 16 of Wyoming's 23 counties.

The proposed legislation, The Peggy A. Kelley Wyoming Cannabis Act of 2016, would legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes and allow farmers and ranchers to grow industrial hemp.

The pro-marijuana group has until Feb. 8 to collect signatures.

Chris Christian, the group's director, said she'd like to collect twice the amount of required signatures to ensure there are enough.

When reached by phone Thursday afternoon, she said she was packaging the petitions to begin collecting signatures Friday morning. The group will start at 10 a.m. at Scooters Scoreboard Bar in Cheyenne.

"I feel a little bit overworked, a little bit tired and way excited," Christian said.

Christian and her three-person team have a statewide tour planned in an effort to visit every county. She said she's received a lot of positive feedback from Wyoming residents.

"I really am optimistic that we're going to be done by Halloween," Christian said.

If the initiative makes it on the 2016 ballot, Christian thinks it will pass. She cited a 2014 survey by the University of Wyoming that found 72 percent of Wyomingites support medical marijuana.

"Now what we have to do is get people to register and vote for it," Christian said.
