FL: Marijuana Business Seminar In Jacksonville Targets Recreational Legalization

A marijuana business seminar will be held Saturday and Sunday, to cover medicinal marijuana issues, but also to prepare clients for an anticipated legalization of recreational pot in Florida within years. "If you just look at medical marijuana in Florida as it stands today, yes, the opportunities may be limited," said George Allen, co-owner of ComfyTree, a Denver, Colo.-based company organizing the "CannaBazaar" seminar. "Our goal is not about today, it's about the future."

The CannaBazaar takes place at the Crowne Plaza hotel on the Southbank from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Allen said the cost is $299 per person for the two-day event.

The event will cover everything from getting into the legal marijuana trade to cultivating the drug. ComfyTree held a seminar in Tampa last fall and has held 15 seminars in other states.

In 2014, there was a run on marijuana business seminars before the election when voters failed to pass the legalization of medicinal marijuana. The seminars were so many and promised so much reward, that even pro-legalization advocates were critical.

"I thought it was a bit shameful (in 2014). It was way cart-before-the-horse and people were simply being greedy, overcharging people to attend a seminar that was essentially worthless," said Keith Stroup, founder and legal counsel for the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, in a Times-Union interview last fall.

The seminar also comes as Florida legislators are wrangling with finalizing current regulations on medicinal marijuana. Patients needing the drug to ease conditions from various afflictions have complained in hearings organized by the Florida Department of Health this year that the state is essentially running a monopoly by allowing only seven state growers to cultivate the drug.

Physicians wanting to prescribe it have complained that it's difficult to get certified by the state and then get direct access because there are few state dispensaries. Even the proposed regulatory stipulations going before the state House and Senate are constantly shifting.

That's why Allen said the CannaBazaar is geared toward a much wider potential than medicinal marijuana. It's a big industry, he said, that includes businesses that impact the core business, for example, branding and marketing, accounting, and inventory analysis.

Allen said people can register at the event on Saturday, or can register in advance at the company's website, event.hellocomfytree.com/Jacksonville.
