According to DHHR, the purpose of the meeting is to discuss organizational structure, first year program work plan and significant milestones. The meeting will be open to the public and will include a public comment period.

Dr. Rahul Gupta, commissioner and state Health Officer for DHHR's Bureau for Public Health, will chair the meeting.

The advisory board, includes Gupta, the chairman, as well as a dozen other physicians, pharmacists, and a social worker, prosecutor, patient advocate and horticulturalist.

Representing Huntington on the board will be Dr. Avinder Bir, a hematology and oncology specialist with HIMG, and Dr. Rudy Malayil, a pain relief specialist with St. Mary's Medical Center.

Gov. Jim Justice signed the medical marijuana measure into law on April 19. It permits doctors to recommend marijuana be used for medicinal purposes and establishes a regulatory system.

The law states that no patient or caregiver ID cards will be issued until July 2019.

Until that date, the board will begin issuing concise rules for the law's implementation, including requirements for growers and processors, dispensaries and doctors, and registration for patients and caregivers.
