LAS CRUCES - Border Patrol agents seized half a ton of marijuana from a pickup after an extended chase of two suspects in the bootheel last Friday.

After a spike strip punctured the tires of the fleeing Ford F-250 pickup, Border Patrol agents had to subdue two suspects, including one juvenile, before recovering bundles containing a total of 1,021 pounds of marijuana, according to a complaint filed in federal court Monday.

The adult suspect, Rafael Molina-Padilla, was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana and conspiracy. According to a federal complaint, Molina allegedly said he was to be paid $3,000 for transporting the narcotics to an undisclosed location.

The incident began about 8:15 a.m. Friday as Border Patrol agents assigned to the Lordsburg area were headed into the Animas Valley to a location a few miles north of the Mexican border. The agents spotted a white Ford F-250 pickup, which matched the description of a vehicle that an intelligence report said would be involved in a smuggling attempt.

The agents noted that the person in the pickup's passenger seat appeared to be wearing a disguise and that the truck's flatbed appeared to have been modified.

The truck was pulled over on a county road, but as the Border Patrol agents were getting out of their vehicle, the pickup sped away.

During the ensuing chase, several attempts to spike the fleeing pickup failed. In one case, the driver allegedly swerved in the direction of Border Patrol agents and came within three feet of striking several of them.

After the pickup was successfully spiked and stopped, Border Patrol agents used a baton and Taser to subdue the suspects, the complaint says.
