General rule of thumb is once you have between 4-6 nodes (alternating sets of true fan leaves) you can top fairly safe without causing to much stress and risking stunting.

But some information would be helpful as GG said above. Photoperiods you have a ton of time to play, where as auto flowers you only have a short window to do any topping, filming, training etc.

I top sometimes or just bend over the main stem before flowering.
