I am not even going to pretend to be able to help with the growing advice, but I saw where you said you couldn't find a humidifier. You can get a real good one fairly cheap (like 10 bucks) at Dollar Gen or Wal Mart (prolly target Kmart etc also) We have gas heat so I keep one running in the winter to keep sinuses from getting dry. They all work pretty much the same so cheap should be fine. I fill mine up about once a week when it runs constantly so you won't have to deal with it every day.
