Hempy Bucket question

What's up FAQ? Noob question here.. In reading about hempy buckets, the method calls for frequent watering until the roots reach the res. How do you know when the roots hit the res?

I'm getting close to my first grow and hempy buckets seem like the perfect way to go. What medium do you use?

Using just perlite at the moment... but considering a move to a perlite/vermiculite mix in the future. Many folks use coco fiber as well.
