A developer is looking to setup a medical marijuana production facility in the Town of Morris.

Mayor Gavin van der Linde says the location being discussed used to be an old chicken barn, located in the heavy industrial area.

A conditional use application would need to be approved by the town.

A public hearing was held Thursday night, with about a dozen local residents in attendance expressing varying opinions. Notices were sent to residents living within 100 meters of the proposed site.

"It is something very new in our area," said van der Linde. "It'll be a whole different type of industry and with it comes some of the history and baggage attached to marijuana as a whole. A lot of the questions [focused] around the business, how it works, how they will sell the product, the security of the product on the facility and how that will be handled."

Van der Linde notes the facility would be regulated by the federal government, with the medical marijuana sold to patients who have a prescription. He says the business would sell much of its product over the Internet.

He explains although new business is always a good idea, it needs to suit the community.

"We need to make sure we do our due diligence before we make any decisions," he said. "We did clearly hear from some concerned residents last [Thursday] night, so we want to take all that under advisement before we look at going into the next steps."
