The Town of Morris has given its approval for the development of a medical marijuana production facility.
Community members had a chance to voice their concerns on the issue at a public hearing held in January.
Council approved the request at its last meeting after conducting further research on the proposal.
"During our investigations, we were satisfied that the process and the application to the federal government would satisfy all our concerns and so we approved the variation [order] at our last meeting," said Mayor Gavin van der Linde. "There is still a long journey ahead for the gentlemen who's looking at buying it as far as applying to the federal agency."
Van der Linde said after looking into the issue, council was satisfied with the proposal.
"There were concerns around the security of the facility and how that would be addressed," said van der Linde. "I know with the federal regulations, that is uppermost in their mind because with facilities around the country, making sure that they have a good reputation, that they are well protected, has been key."
A condition of the approval is that the developer must enter into a development agreement with the Town of Morris that would outline the concerns and expectations for the facility.
Van der Linde notes he wishes the entrepreneur well in his endeavour, noting it may be difficult obtaining a federal license. He adds there is only one other medical marijuana production facility situated in Manitoba.
"At the end of the day it is a licensed business, it works with prescriptions and is strictly controlled by the federal government and so with that background in mind we welcome a business like that to town, making sure that they are run like a pharmacy with all the hoops and all the balances that are there."
