I am popping some new seeds right now, I am using jiffy pellets, I just lost 2 seedlings because the roots dried out, how can I make sure the bottoms of the jiffy pellets are staying wet and how do i stop thw roots from popping out and dying. I am not using the green house, just plastic bottle domes.

I am budget growing lol

i never liked them , i plant straight into my own soilless mix , peat moss , compost, perlite , every one of my seeds popped up

the mix is wet dry very fast but less chance of drying out , i water almost daily too :)

so i took the time to go take some pics on how i do my seeds , remember this may not work for every one

mix same amounts perlite , compost , peat moss to fill small pot ( use the finer peat moss not the lumps ) break it up

fill half way and push down to firm it so seed doesn't sink

soak with water that's been boiled then cooled

add seed and cover with thumb nail deep mix ( not too deep )

water lightly again , let drain

add a clear bag with holes so it breaths
a heat mat works but i use m CFL reflector its a lovely heat

check on it morning and evening

when you see the husk don't water let it come up , when the pot gets light in weight water lightly just to wet the mix with a little run off out the bottom ,

lastly let me know how you get on :cheesygrinsmiley:

I used jiffy pods and found them very easy. Soak the jiffy pods pop the seeds in then put a cover over them like plastic or something to make it humid inside. Then if you can set the container the jiffy pods are in on a heat mat

So I planted some new seeds of an unknown strain (indica is all I know) straight into the damp seed starter. I did 3 of the guys and put the humidity dome over them after spraying the inside of the dome. I literally used the tops of Gatorade bottles because it fit on my cups perfectly.

I also have pictures of the seedlings that popped in the jiffy pots and I placed those into damp seed starter as well. What do you think. How do they look. I am worried about the bigger one because it is so bendy

What works for me is to place Jiffy in cut down solo cup. I get dry weight, wet weight and keep 10grams below wet and add water to cup when weight gets down to 10 grams above dry and let Jiffy wick it up. 2-3 days later when tap emerges I transfer to final. Easy peasy. Organic soil auto grower. P.S.-Lose the domes. Domes are for clones. You risk damping off.

Hey Windsor, be sure to cut the webbing or membrane off of those jiffy pots before transplant. I've had young plants die and when I did rootopsy the roots never made it past the covering. Yes I know roots are supposed to grow right thru the skin but I’ve seen the same problem more than once. I really like the peat pellets but was discouraged when my plants died.

Yep same as skirk- domes are for clones that don’t have root systems and used to keep humidity up during transition. Domes on seedlings can cause damping off.

Jiffy pellets are great for starting seeds you have to keep them damp at all times. I usually water every day a little bit and leave some extra water in the btm of the tray I have them in. As soon as you see true leaves unwrap the plastic off the pellet and transplant that into a solo cup with soil. Be careful not to damage the roots coming out the sides. Once there's roots showing you need to put the pellet in soil and water it.

i should have said i only use the bag for the first two days to make the humidity rise , thats why i poke a few holes too because of damping off , though my soil is sterilised first with hot water when seeding ,

you dont need domes once the hull is off :)

Here are my seedlings now... the first picture was from Sept 29 and I swapped out my light for double what I was using.

I am now using a 120 W LED bulb and there is new growth!!!

I am such a proud mama lol
