Police busted a marijuana-growing operation believed to have been worth more than $1 million Thursday morning.
The Northwest Regional Drug Task Force and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration served a search warrant at a house on the 3700 block of Taylor Avenue after a three-month investigation, according to a task force press release.
When officials entered the building they found that the entire split-level home had been converted into a growing facility, complete with large incubation lights and an industrial air scrubber vented through the chimney. The house contained more than 800 plants.
No one was home at the time and the lack of furniture led officials to believe that no one lived at the house full time. Investigators do have several suspects in the case and are in the process of searching for them, according to the press release.
Officials began investigating the house after an off-duty police officer walked by and smelled the odor of marijuana, according to the press release.
The task force is made up of personnel from the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, Prosecutor’s Office, Bellingham Police Department, Ferndale Police Department, Washington State Patrol and U.S. Border Patrol.
