Story about my trip to the ER today. Hopsital Workers Reactions to ALL of my meds

So, there's been some kind of sickness crap going around the house here... and of COURSE I got it. Couldn't get in w/my regular doc the entire week & today I couldn't take it anymore & went to the ER... to avoid boring you w/the tests, etc... I have bronchitis & some other crap. To get to the good part of the story...

I get there, tell the lady that checks you in and decides "how sick" you are what my issues are & what meds I'm on, and likes always, I include pot, but I usually choose the words MMJ or Medicinal Cannabis instead. Anyway, she's a volunteer that works there and she wrote down my other 5 meds w/zero issue, but that one, I get the raised eyebrow & she didn't even write it down. I repeated it and she says "Well that's not a medication." I said "Um, I have a prescription, so I'm gonna go with, yes it is." She told me to let the nurse decide, hands me some papers and points me to the waiting room. Mental note: I don't like her.

Anyway, the nurse gets me in a few minutes & he does all my vitals, etc. I repeat all the same info & tell him about the pot & he asks what I use it for & I tell him & he asks me how it's working for me & he actually asked if that was why the dosage of my medication was different than before (I started carrying a list of my meds w/dosages etc instead of trying to remember...). I told him yes & that I was getting to come off of that medication... he told me how he was a huge advocate of MMJ & off and on while I was there he would check on me & was actually pretty inquisitive but in a VERY positive manner. He even brought me a newspaper that had an article about a dispensary... lmao How funny - I volunteer there! He even came back later and gave me a cool little card to carry in my wallet to put my meds on... so I don't have to carry this stupid piece of notebook paper around.

And the doctor, he was awesome. He had to give me meds for several things that were wrong b/c of my other medical issues, but I explained concerns about meds & also that I preferred MMJ over other things and wanted to use that over other methods as much as possible. He thought it was great that I doing something more natural for myself. The only thing he suggested was that I take a break from smoking until my cough settles down and consume edibles. He did send me home with a cough med for days and one for nights as well w/codeine in it to take if I wanted and said that if my cough settled enough that I could smoke if I needed to, but said something more concentrated would probably be better tolerated than smoking pot b/c the plant matter might be too hard on my lungs.

Now really - how great is that? A nurse that took the time to ask questions because he just wanted to know more about how it helped a patient and a doctor that not only supported his patient using it but ALSO was able to give out advice in a positive way?

And, YES, I took the time to write their names down so that I can write a letter to the hospital about how freaking amazing they are.

Good story. Sounds like you were lucky enough to find a doctor that wasn't owned by big pharma

VERY INTERESTING!

Hope you're all well and feeling fine soon.

I feel almost back to my normal self, thanks. I won't say it has anything to do with the pot... wait, I will. LOL

Sungoddess, Loved your story !! Hope you wrote back to the hospital and mentioned how impressed you were with the two people who helped you the most ! Maybe even a letter to your local paper !? This is what people need to hear ! not us, we already know !! Glad to hear your cutting down on the pharmas. that sounds like healing to me ! Just heard yesterday about 3 dispensaries in Goleta and Summerland being closed !! Looks like it's going to be a battle soon !! Write letters and see where your local politcians stand on pot laws !! VOTE !! :peace:

Make sure you exclude the snotty nurse... lol

It's always pleasant when you don't feel like your doing something wrong. Best wishes on a speedy recovery.

I plan to write to the hospital this week. I hadn't thought about the local paper. That's a great idea.

That is great & so inspirational. I had been wondering how I should handle my next hospital or ambulance driver since I have health issues. Now I know that it is okay to tell them the truth instead of them wondering whats up when they get my lab work back with a little something extra in it. Thank you so much for sharing this story.

The good thing for doctors is they can have it both ways. That is what confidential means folks! A doctor and patient with no one in between. What big pharma does not know...

Now thats a good doc. My doctor called me a dopehead when I had mentioned my use of marijuana for anxiety. And told me the reason I wasn't getting better was because of my use of marijuana. And proceeded to write me a prescription for 3 different nerve pills a day. one for anxiety, one for nerves, and one for sleeping. which I did a whole lot of when taking them. needless to say he is no longer my doc. And I no longer take the med's that were given to me by him. So I guess I am a dopehead. but at least I can function normally without having to take several naps a day.

It's a great idea only if the hospital is as progressive as the nurse and doctor attending you. If they're not, it might cost that nurse and doctor their jobs.

Not to be a buzz-kill here, but there is a war going on against cannabis and its users, and even though you had a great experience (as it should be, I might add!), there are still others that would squash it all in a second if they could. And that might be hospital administration (or law enforcement if read in the newspaper)....just a thought. Be ever mindful of yourself and others in this thing until it's legal across the board.

Perhaps instead send heartfelt greeting cards to the nurse and the doctor themselves, so they know that they did the right thing and that you are forever grateful for their care and thankful that they did not treat you like less than a human being (as I've been treated in a similar circumstance, though it concerned a broken hand that required surgery that they wouldn't do BECAUSE I use cannabis--resulting in a badly healed break that restricts the use of my right hand).

You were lucky, girl. And I am so very happy that it went that way, because it is a sign of changes for the betterment of us all....:peacetwo:

Thanks for your reply. ACTUALLY, the reason that I have not written to the hospital board is b/c I had a discussion with someone locally about my excitement to write to the hospital and he cautioned me about the potential of the staff getting into trouble. I've been in a sort of rock & hard spot since. I do want to make sure that the hospital is aware of my happiness with them, but I do not want it to result in any negative impact for the workers.

I still would like to write to the local paper as well, especially considering that there has been a LOT of negative media concerning cannabis here lately. It's just a matter of HOW I'm going to be able to do it without negatively hitting anyone.

TOTALLY open to suggestions.

I think as long as you do not mention mmj, but perhaps their support for "alternative herbal medication" vs. drugs with dangerous side effects, you might get by. But even then--if hospitals and their staff are seeming to not support big pharma, it can still affect them in a negative way. There are a lot of big money players in this war--and they will, given the opportunity, destroy anyone that goes against their game. Moneyed, powerful people and groups cannot be easily assailed, but us little peeps--and those that work for establishments with money and power at stake--can be eaten up by those more powerful than us.

I hate having to post grim stuff. But that's the way it is until the war is over. :peace:

Unfortunate to post, but a fact of the fight.

I'm happy they are supportive and doing the right thing for their patients. I just don't want to thank them in a way that leaves them sitting at home on their couch regretting it at the end of the day, ya know?

I just went to get my eyes tested. My eye doctor is just waiting till he can write a script for Cannabis like general doctors can. I am up here in Canada where it is legal at a federal level. The eye doctors know how good this plant is. They want to save as much of your sight as they can with the minimum side effects.

For years, every young doc wannabe is inculcated with big pharmas' party line. $$
Their egos get pumped up to withstand peer review. The weak fall aside.
That any docs in america actually care for the comfort of their clients is the surprise.
Surgeons cut to cure. The rest use chemical warfare.

I bet that If WE WERE to walk in to a HOSPITAL today @ 1:45pm and U.A all the Doctors,Nurse's & Specialist we would find 75% were on something that was not Prescribed, Given or told to take By a Doctor! Now Thats in Texas ,I can,t speck for others states wildman:thumb:
