One of the largest cannabis facilities in Canada has officially opened its doors.

CannTrust is located near Fenwick in the Niagara region.

The company held its grand opening for its completion of one of two phases on Tuesday.

The 450,000 sq. ft. hydroponic facility works in a “perpetual harvest” system. CannTrust officials say it is an innovative and one-of-a-kind way to produce marijuana.

“Perpetual production means we have rows of tables that are filed by the weekend. So, we have 10 rows of tables here and the strain production takes 10 weeks,” said President and COO Brad Rogers.

Rogers describes this method as continuous production. He adds there are always plants being harvested 365 days a year.

He said they use a moving table system, “When they’re ready to be harvested we bring those tables out, we pull them right out of the room and put them into harvest.”

Rogers says the company distributes 50,000 kilograms of marijuana annually.

Once their expansion is complete, they predict they will be produce close to 100,000 kilograms worth of pot.

The facility employs just under 200 people mainly of the Niagara region.

Officials predict that number will grow substantially in 2019.

Once legislation allows for outdoor marijuana production, Rogers said the company will be expanding again to making it’s reach to about 1 million sq. ft.
