2 gal pot veg time

I've got 5 plants in 2 gallon pots under a 600w HPS-MH conversion bulb. All have been fimmed and are recovering nicely. My question is how long, on average, should 2 gallon plants be allowed to veg? I know plants can veg indefinitely, but I also know there's only so much space for roots to grow.

The indoor 'bible' says 3 gallons are good for a one month veg cycle...

Any ideas?

1 Foot a Gallon is the rule of thumb. 6 inch plant for half gallon so on.

2 gallon pot I would veg 10-12" ......whatever the time is it is.
I am using 3 gallon and I will veg to 20"
