400w hps

my friend recently tore his grow room down and he offered me a 400w hps light with ballast for 70$ i was wondering if this was a good deal and if i could use light for veg and flower

From what I have read in these forums MH is best for Veg.

Thats a good price, get it. You can still use an hps for veg, it is not as good as an mh but it works fine.You can use floros or cfl for veg and flower with the hps.. All kinds of things you can do..

I would pick up a new bulb unless the one he's giving you is pretty new already. And yes you can use a hps to veg and flower I do it all the time. I would recommend getting an eye hortilux brand bulb. They are HPS with a touch of the blue spectrum as well. Which is good for veg.
