420times.com BANNED at Mariott Hotel

I was staying in Ventura on business last night, at the local Mariott hotel. THey had a free modem I could plug my computer into for high speed access. I plugged my cat 5 cable into the modem, and began surfing the web. I typed in the address for 420times.com....and it was blocked by the web filtering software that ran throgh their router. THe filter was St. Bernard or some name like that. I was fucking PISSED! Here I was, an adult male, on business, being BLOCKED from accessing data on the world wide web because the hotel chain I am at seems to think it's innapropriate. Unbelievable restriction of personal freedom! Do the also listen in on my calls and end my connection when I begin talking about something "indecent"? The hotel will be recieving a letter of outrage from me soon. Anyone know of any webpages out there that re-route you to OTHER web pages, bypassing the filter? I read about a few in 2600, but l but assumed I would never need it.......I never expected outside of a school or library to be restricted in my communication and data gathering. Since I should equate this somehow with weed, I was extremely high at the time I noticed this travesty, and subsequentley, I am extremely high right now.

Well man, they are a private organization, and you ARE using their cable...
Question...
Did they make you pay for it?

I KNOW they are a private organization....im not disputiong they haev the RIGHT to do that. I just think it's wrong to restrict peoples access to information on the global world wide web. What if I had been a college student who was doing research on marijuana cultuire? What if I was a california citizen with a doctors recomendation for medical marijuana who was looking for information? I happent o be BOTH of those, and in terms of cutsomer service, I dont appreciate the hotel telling me thoser things are innapropriate or that I can't view them. Should they also be able to check my incoming mail and listen in on my phone calls? It just pisses me off, and while they certainly have the right, I am unstatisfied as a customer with their filtering of possibly crucial information.
Yes, the connection was free...as well as the TV. I saw more smut and nastyness on TV than I ever see at 420times.com, and the hotel didnt restrict ANY of it. In fact, I was perfectly capable of ordering PORN with my remote control.

:jerkit: sure PM we know what you where doing...... lol j/p..but honestly . thats really messed up i could see why they would do that as far as blocking sites but on the other hand you have little teeny boppers lookin at stuff they dont need to ... now whatd be nice is if there was like an age restrication thing like if ur over 18 then youve got free roam... under 18 ur screwed almost like a parental control.. but... i would def write a letter. il take a look around and see if i canr find anything about bypassing the filter.. but hey dont get too lost in the pron since u cant access this hehehe lata bud..

ps even suggest that there be like a parental control setup .. idk judt an idea

Sir, I wouldnt mind an age restriction options at all, thats perfectly acceptale, and if I chose the lifestyle of having children, I would proably appreciate the service. But I dont think I should be blocked becuase people who DO chose that lifestyle arent good parents, and dont watch their kids in a tiny hotel room when they use the computer. But hey, I'll just express this ALLLL in my letter ;-)

I see your point now man.
Give 'em hell, I'm sure you will.
BTW, what exactly did the customer service people say to you?

I agree it's kind of unfair to your rights, but they're more doing it to save their own asses than try to restrict personal freedoms. They can't really allow free range to the internet to everyone and then not expect to have some angry customers complaining about the sites they came across, etc, etc.

Businesses can't please everyone, so unfortunatly they make rules that please most people.

After all, it doesn't look too good for the hotel if someone goes to check in and sees people browsing drugs or porn sites :laughtwo:

Sexy, and that would be true....if I WASNT allowed to press one buttoin on my remote to order pornography on my TV. I definately see your point, but it seems rather hypocritical to offer porn at the click of a button,...but filter what web pages I read :p
