Nigeria - The Ondo State command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has seized 32.9 tonnes of Indian hemp valued at N3 billion in the last eight months in the state.
The state Commandant of the agency, Walter Nicholas disclosed this to journalists at a news conference in Akure, the state capital yesterday.
Mr Nicholas said the command lost two officers to the activities of Indian hemp growers that have formed a powerful cabal in the state in the past year.
He added that the agency made a seizure of 6.7 tonnes of cannabis in January alone; stressing that command has also destroyed 357 hectares of Indian hemp plantation in some farms identified in the state.
He added that at least 18 people have been charged to court over drug related offences and were convicted by the courts of law.
Mr Nicholas noted that the war against illicit drugs in the state has been carried out by the command with collaboration from the police, State Security Service (SSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
He said, “Since my assumption of office in April 2010, the command has taken the message of a drug free society to various towns and villages in the state to ensure that the people were sensitised on the need to shun drug.
“I have already visited some traditional rulers in the state including the Olowo of Owo, the Alayede of Ogbese and Deji of Akure who are the custodians of the people and the custodians of the land. This is to sensitise the people on the need not to give their lands to those that use them to cultivate Indian hemp.”
Mr Nicholas however urged the people to cooperate with the command and also give it the necessary support to ensure that it succeeds in the fight against hard drugs.
The state commandant also disclosed that the command now has a counselling and rehabilitation centre where those involved in drugs are advised on the way to live their lives.
