Arkansans applying for a medical marijuana card could end up finding out as early as mid-July if they've been approved or not.

The Arkansas Department of Health is launching the application process this Friday, and officials tell KATV those who apply will get a letter of approval or denial within 14 days.

Thousands of Arkansans have been patiently waiting to apply for a medical marijuana card, ADH estimates around 30,000 will apply for a card, however, those approved will not see their card until at least 30 days before a dispensary opens.

"The reason why we're waiting to actually issue the card is because the card is valid for one year after the date of issuance, and so we don't want to give people cards right now when they're not good," said Marisha DiCarlo, ADH's Health Communications Director.

The four requirements to apply are:

-A valid and current Arkansas driver's license or state I.D.

-A physician certification form, where a doctor must make note on the form which medical marijuana qualifying condition you suffer from. The physician must be from Arkansas and have their physicians I.D. number submitted along with the form.

-A $50 non-refundable application fee will need to be paid.

-The online application process will need to be fully completed.

"There's been a little misunderstanding out there that people need a letter from their doctor, or that's it's a prescription or something like that, and it's not...it's that form that's issued by the department of health that they have to take to their physician," added DiCarlo.

Once a card has been issued, patients will be able to just print cards. A bar code will be associated with the name, if another is printed, the previous code will not scan at a dispensary.

By law, Arkansans will be allowed to purchase 2 ½ ounces every 14 days, and the state will be using an electronic tracking system to prevent abuse of the system.
