Australian Cannabis Oil: Man Facing Criminal Charges Over Dying Daughter's Treatment

Hunter medical marijuana campaigners are rallying behind a Brisbane father who has been criminally charged for using cannabis oil to treat his dying daughter.

Adam Koessler was charged at a Brisbane hospital last Friday for supply dangerous drugs to a minor after giving his two-year-old daughter, Rumer, medical grade cannabis oil in a desperate bid to treat her stage 4 neuroblastoma cancer.

Mr Koessler said he had travelled from Cairns to Brisbane for his daughter's treatment and had been at a meeting with her oncologist at a Brisbane hospital on January 2 when he was arrested and charged.

He said he was charged with supplying dangerous drugs to a person under 16 and possessing dangerous drugs and was bailed to appear at Brisbane Magistrate's Court on January 20.

He said his daughter had taken cannabis oil, mixed with coconut, as an infusion in her food and the results had been remarkable.

Asked if he had a message to the public he said that after his daughter was diagnosed he wanted to do everything possible to maximise her chances of living, which had been put at 50/50.

"I saw first hand that the cannabis oil was extremely beneficial and I hope I simply did what any father would do."

Mr Koessler has been bailed to face court on January 20 but as part of his bail conditions is unable to have contact with his daughter.

Since being forced off the cannabis oil last week, Rumer's condition has dramatically worsened and she is now in intensive care on morphine.

The arrest has outraged medical cannabis advocates, who claim parents should have the right to treat their own children with an effective medicine.

Newcastle-based NSW Hemp Party spokesman B.J. Futter said politicians and bureaucrats were out of touch with the way that medical cannabis was operating in the community.

"To separate states into red tape mine fields and to keep this medicine from the population is an atrocity when one actually sees the extent of those who are ill," Mr Futter said.

Referring to the way the child was put on to opiate pain killers after her father's arrest, he said "the current legal position regarding the enforced medical treatment of an innocent child is unconscionable".

Mr Koessler said the oil, which contains none of the compound which gets recreational users high, was having a "miraculous" effect on his daughter.

"What we saw when Rumer was given the medical cannabis oil was nothing short of miraculous," he said.

"Her cancer-ridden little body was alive again — Rumer had almost instant quality of life.

"She would say 'Daddy, tummy's not sore' and she would be able to eat like a champion and began to gain weight.

"Her energy was up and she wanted to go outside with me instead of lay on her back with her legs curled up.

"Her skin colour came back, her eyes were sparkling again and we just looked at each other in complete amazement."

Mr Koessler's arrest comes as the NSW government rushes towards medical marijuana reform, with a range of clinical trials announced last month.

Tamworth mum and medical marijuana crusader Lucy Haslam said Mr Koessler's arrest had the potential to set back the national debate.

"Queensland Premier Campbell Newman knows about this issue and I find the timing very interesting," Mrs Haslam said.

"This has the potential to be a real election issue."

The arresting attorney just created a poster child

Are we saying that this murder has a positive result? Couldn't a bloch come up with something more appropriate as a comment?

I think the comment holds a lot of weight actually.
Here is a gorgeous little girl, innocently thrust into the middle of what is fast becoming one of the hottest debates of early this century. She is not the only one suffering from the laws we are bound to, but it's a perfect picture of where a loving Father is trying to save his Daughters life, and the law is standing between them allowing her to suffer needlessly. I think everyone should see this picture and try to understand it.
I think everyone fighting for this needs to look at her picture, and re invigorate their passion for the cause.
I think everyone fighting against this, needs to look at her picture, and try to remind themselves what it is they are against.
Cheers n Peace

Little girl Rumor Koessler is not dead.
I actual was trying to look up the name of the court officer who decided to bring charges when my phone hit a dead spot.

I like your passion, but if you think about the meaning of a poster child, I think her story is at least as compelling in the southern hemisphere as the story of Charlotte Figi in the USA. That is what I meant by poster child.

You showed you can attack your fellow man, now let us see if YOU can make a positive comment about how to move forward.

Re: Australian Cannabis Oil: Man Facing Criminal Charges Over Dying Daughter's Treatm

This is an absolute tragedy. What right does "the state," have to take a child away from the parent? That is the most criminal thing I see here! I hope she lives but should she pass, I hope the father sues the shite out of whomever is doing this to his family. If I was him I would try any means to remove his child from the prison she's in and take her somewhere safe where he can try to mend her. But I don't suppose he has the means to accomplish that. Big government is just far too interfering in our lives, it seems all over the world. I feel for this family and hope for the best outcome.

Re: Australian Cannabis Oil: Man Facing Criminal Charges Over Dying Daughter's Treatm

I agree wholeheartedly ─ 'makes one wonder how people who should know better can stoop sufficiently low to do shit like this to anyone!

Re: Australian Cannabis Oil: Man Facing Criminal Charges Over Dying Daughter's Treatm

This shows the public that there are uses for cannabis other than using it as an excuse to persecute your fellow man.

Re: Australian Cannabis Oil: Man Facing Criminal Charges Over Dying Daughter's Treatm

... what we have been shown here is the Truth about State Terrorism - nothing defines it better than this!

Murder is the first word for this type of tyranny by the state. or should we name it instead: Fascism, Nazism, Capitalism - pick which!

Look mate, no one is saying anything of the sort, the child is still alive. What is being said (for your information only) is the arresting attorney is doing "his cause" more harm than good by using a totally unjust law to persecute the child's father. Now, does this help you understand the comment a little better?

This world is an ugly place.

Best wishes to Rumer and her family in this fight for life and happiness.

:peace:

I'm mistaken here, brother - as I meant to say, I think this is much more and far worse a situation than something as simplistic as "poster child" - if that is the most cogent or relevant
comment that person can come up with, then goddfrogg save us all !?!

Re: Australian Cannabis Oil: Man Facing Criminal Charges Over Dying Daughter's Treatm

That poor phuque is locked in a cell while his child is being murdered and some people want to make a friggin poster!

Are you saying that their picture in the news articles should also be removed ?
Maybe nobody should hear about this, or see the human side of this tragedy via visual image ?
I understand the point you are trying to make, but I see no ill manner in Radogast's comment.
The fact that the comment "only" points out that the prosecutor just gave that one image a huge amount of emotional power that feeds directly off the cause to legalise our beloved medicinal herb, doesn't mean that Radogast is morally bankrupt or devoid of any emotion over the family's plight.
I actually agree ( with Radogast ) , I think maybe the prosecution has a skewed agenda. By bringing a case this powerful into the public eye, they are strengthening the case to legalise and desensitising the public so that the naysayers can soften and become more receptive to the idea.
Cheers n Peace

Re: Australian Cannabis Oil: Man Facing Criminal Charges Over Dying Daughter's Treatm

There was a small show of people last Friday outside the courthouse, only a couple of dozen I believe.
I also believe there are going to be more gatherings, if possible I will definately attend.
Only problem here is I'm getting a bit old here and travelling is not a passion of mine. It matters not what silly arguements some put up she is a small child and will most likely die, would anyone here change places with the father?
What a horrible delema, his heart must be breaking, my thoughts are for both of them.
Come on Aussies rise to the occasion.

Indeed, Brother - Lets put this bickering to bed - My initial comment was mis-guided - I wanted simply to show my reaction to my own (mis) interpretation of the triviality of "poster-child" in this regard!

This entire story creates a "Poster" that illustrates the murderous agenda & evils of Fascist controllers of Europe & North America in our society!
