Organizers hope to create legal defense fund.

With top local blues acts and a cause that speaks to hundreds of medical marijuana caregivers and patients in the Boulder area, organizers are hoping to draw a crowd to a legal defense benefit Wednesday night.

The immediate beneficiary is local musician and poet Maus Isi (whose real name is Nicholas Paloshek), who was arrested in June for felony possession of marijuana.

Paloshek has a valid medical marijuana card, but he didn't have it with him and had more than the two-ounce limit described in state law.

But organizers hope to use the event as an opportunity to start a legal defense fund to help other medical marijuana patients who can't pay for their defense.

Paloshek, who also works as a recording engineer, said his income has been cut significantly because he can't travel out of the state for jobs, and he cannot afford to pay his lawyer.

Attorney Jeff Gard stressed that he is not charging Paloshek to represent him and hopes the case will be resolved quickly, before significant costs are incurred.

But Paloshek said he wants Gard to get paid something for his time, and other defendants shouldn't have to rely on charity from their attorneys.
